About this opportunity

OpenAI's AI and Teen Development Research Grant Program is seeking proposals to explore the intersection of AI and teen development. The program aims to deepen understanding and generate evidence on topics such as how teens use generative AI, its potential impacts on their lives, and the individual, social, cultural, and technical factors shaping these effects. It also welcomes research into technical interventions, safeguards, and design choices that can enhance benefits or improve safety for teens, considering how these effects may vary across different ages, developmental stages, populations, cultures, languages, and socioeconomic contexts. Eligibility requires applicants to be 18 or older and affiliated with a research institution or organization, or possess significant experience in child/adolescent development, well-being, human-computer interaction, or AI impacts. The program specifically does not prioritize for-profit initiatives. Individual research grants of up to $1 million are available, with a total funding pool of up to $5 million. A maximum of 10% of each grant can cover overhead or indirect costs, and funds can support student involvement. The program prefers projects that can deliver final results quickly, requesting a working draft within 12 months of receiving funds. Collaborative proposals between multiple institutions are encouraged. The grants are funded and administered by OpenAI Group PBC.

How to apply

Submissions are open from September 8, 2026, until October 6, 2026. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis by an internal panel, with notifications for selected proposals on or before November 13, 2026.
