About Sigma-TCM
Across Africa, TVET instructors are being asked to teach digital and AI skills they were never trained to teach. Curricula are moving faster than instructor capacity — and no amount of investment in student-facing technology fixes that gap.
Sigma-TCM is our answer: a digital and AI literacy instructor-training programme grounded in threshold concept theory and Ubuntu philosophy. Instead of importing a generic training template, we target the specific conceptual stuck points instructors face, in a cohort format they can complete alongside their teaching load.
We're validating this through a four-study Design-Based Research sequence: starting with an exploratory study in Ethiopia, a core validation study in South Africa, followed by larger-scale validation in Uganda and Kenya, and a fourth study with higher-education teacher-trainers in South Africa.
We're seeking $100,000 to fund our founding pilot studies in Ethiopia and South Africa — covering curriculum delivery, our MEAL and UX evaluation framework and in-country coordination.
