How to apply for startup grants in Uganda
Almost every grant above is applied for online, on the funder's own form. The work is much the same from one grant to the next, so getting it right once makes every later application faster. For the whole process, from choosing the right kind of funding to what happens after you apply, read how to get startup funding in Africa.
- Check you meet every hard requirement. Read the eligibility on the grant's page: country, sector, stage, whether the business must be registered, and any rules on the founders' age or gender. Funders rarely bend these, so a near miss is usually a rejection.
- Register the business before you need to. Most grants for founders in Uganda ask for a business registered with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) and a URA TIN. Registration can take weeks, so start it before a deadline is close.
- Gather the documents most applications ask for (listed below), so each new application is mostly a matter of writing the answers.
- Answer the funder's own criteria. Say what problem you solve and for whom, the traction you have so far, exactly what the grant money will pay for, and how you will measure the result. Answers copied from another application read that way.
- Submit before the deadline and keep a copy. Portals slow down on the last day. Note when the funder says it will decide, and keep your answers for the next grant.
What you'll usually need
- Business registration certificate from the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB)
- URA TIN
- ID for each founder
- A pitch deck or short business plan
- A budget showing how you'll spend the grant
- Evidence of traction: users, sales or pilots
- Short founder bios, and sometimes a one- or two-minute video
Why grant applications get rejected
- The business doesn't meet one of the eligibility rules
- The answers don't address what the funder said it is looking for
- No budget, or a vague one, for how the money will be used
- Missing documents or an unfinished form
- Submitted after the deadline
Genuine grant programmes don't charge you to apply. If a "grant" asks for an application fee, treat it as a warning sign.
